Last year, a pine siskin was a new life bird for me. Today, they're still a real treat to spot on the feeders.Baltimore oriole on orange feeder.Baltimore oriole, first female I've photographed this year.Hairy woodpecker, on suet cageEastern KingbirdVesper sparrow. This was a confusing I.D. at first, but multiple birders have helped identify it as a vesper sparrow.
Bobolinks, first I've photographed this year.Chipping Sparrows, perchedChipping Sparrows, one flying towards the other.Savannah Sparrow, standing on a compost pileEntirely by accident, I managed to get this shot of an Eastern Kingbird snatching a bug out of the air and starting to swallow it whole.Warbling vireo. I first thought it was a flycatcher. One of these years, I'll figure these out.A pair of Baltimore Orioles were chasing one another all throughout the setback. This one landed for a moment right across the road from me.
Yellow warbler, perchedBlue-gray gnatcatcherYellow warbler, perched in tree.Yellow warbler, taking flightEvery spring I need to relearn my flycatchers, so I'm not sure what this one is yet.Great crested flycatcher, first I've ever successfully photographed. Common yellowthroats made a major appearance at Herrick's cove this morning, showing up in large numbers.
What I love about this shot is the detail I got of how the oriole perches on the orange feeder. It has one leg holding it onto the rim, but the other is stretched out above its head to grab onto the orange. Blue-gray gnatcatcher, perched.Blue-gray gnatcatcher, hanging out near the birch trees by the water's edge. Probably one of the best pictures I've ever taken of one.Several years ago, we put up an oriole feeder. No orioles ever came to it, but many hummingbirds did. Eventually we just gave up and replaced it with a hummingbird feeder. Today, in addition to at least one hummingbird, there was a downy-woodpecker on the hummingbird feeder and, this evening, this oriole. Go figure.Baltimore oriole, on feeder pole.I decided to give an experiment a try: I know there are lots of orioles in the neighborhood, and they sometimes come to the feeders, but hadn't when I was around so far. So I tried whistling a mimic of their call. Nothing happened, so I tried a few more times and gave up. Within about 90 seconds, this guy showed up.Ruby-throated hummingbird, hovering near feeder.
Ruby-throated hummingbirdAmerican redstart, best look I've ever had of one. This was a real treat: I've worked hard to get not very good pictures of an American Redstart on multiple occasions. To have one just suddenly show up in the yard and flit about was a great opportunity.Tufted titmouse, with seed in mouth.Tufted titmouse, waiting for feeders.Rose-breasted Grosbeak, waiting for feeder seed.First hummingbird I've seen this year.
This brown thrasher showed up in our yard today and hung out for most of the day. I've never seen one in a residential area before.Rose-breasted grosbeak, first I've photographed this year. This eastern towhee showing up under the feeders was a major surprise. I've never seen one in our yard (or any other human habitat) before.Yellow warbler, almost directly overhead.Tree swallowWarbling vireo, best photo I've ever taken of one.Blue jay on tray feeder.
Yellow-rumped warbler, on a nearby tree. This is probably the best yellow warbler picture I've ever taken.I spotted a pair of grackles jumping all over one another. I still don't know enough about bird behavior to know whether this was a mating ritual or violence, but I did manage to get this snapshot of the two of them sort of locked in together.White-breasted nuthatch on stalk feeder.Backyard blue jay, hiding in the bushes.White-breasted nuthatchBackyard chipping sparrow.
Greater Yellowlegs, first I've ever seen at Allen Brothers MarshSometimes photos are worth waiting for. I spotted this white-throated sparrow hiding in the brush and just decided to see if it would make itself visible. It worked, and gave me this cool shot of a bird hiding in twigs.Palm WarblerThis Brown Thrasher was making itself very visible, hanging out near the waterline.Grey catbird, singing its heart out by the edge of the water.Evening grosbeak on tray feeder.I had some errands to run today; when I got home there were a pair of evening grosbeaks sitting on the feeder I'd just put up this morning. This was a first for me: not the evening grosbeaks, but getting both evening and rose-breasted grosbeaks coming to our feeders on the same day.
